Nokia's new 8310 is a small phone - 97 mm x 43 mm x 17mm, weighing 84g - and I've never been a fan of the smallest phones speaking strictly from a handling point of view. The usability of a phone is something that often suffers when manufacturers try cramming the technology into a device as small as possible, but fortunately Nokia seems to have found a good formula for implementing this in their new high-end model.
The hardware
The phone is very nice to look at from all possible angles and views, and since its cover is exchangeable, the looks can be altered literally with a couple of quick flicks of your hand. The power on/off button is located on top of the phone, while the volume up/down controls are located at the upper left side of the phone. On the upper right side, the infrared port is placed, and as usual charger and accessory connections are placed under the phone.
The display of the 8310 is relativly small (84 x 48 pixels/5 lines of text), but still manages to present well what it's supposed to, while the ordinary greenish backlight has been replaced with a light grey one that's comfortable to look at. Additionally, the cover of the phone is partly translucent so that a blue light shines through to illuminate the keys, and the different covers have varying translucence and color use so that you'll get a whole new color set in every way when switching to a new cover.
The software
Nokia is still sticking to the same old user interface - and rightly so. The menu of the Nokia 8310 consists of the 12 categories Messages, Call register, Profiles, Settings, Games, Calculator, To Do, Calendar, Infrared, Radio, Accessories and Services.
The phone can store up to 150 SMS messages or 50 ReviewsPic messages, which can be stored in folders defined by the user or in the archive, as well as in an Inbox and an Outbox. It's also possible to create own templates and store these in a folder called Templates. The phone book can store up to 500 names, with up to three phone numbers for each.
A new section under the Call register category is statistics for your GPRS use, where the phone will both register the amount of time you've been connected and the amount of data you have sent and received.
Profiles have become a standard for all phones, and the Nokia 8310 offers five of them - these can also be set to be activated at certain times. The To Do application simply contains a list of To Do items, which as a nice touch is sorted by priority - 1 is high priority, 2 is normal priority and 3 is low priority. Notes are also a handy addition where up to 30 notes can be stored depending on their length, and these can also be transferred to the Calendar or sent to others via SMS.
Speaking of the Calendar, that too is now a well known function in most phones, and the Nokia 8310 can store from 100 to up to 250 calendar entries. These can also be sent to others via SMS, or synchronized with other devices that supports this through the infrared port.
Brand new for Nokia, however, is the integrated FM radio where up to nine of ones favorite stations can be stored, and the listening time is supposed to be up to 8 hours according to Nokia - quite good for a device this small.
The Accessories menu is where everything related to voice functions is placed. The 8310 can store up to 3 minutes of voice notes, and up to 5 phone functions chosen by the user can be controlled by means of voice only, and up to 10 phone numbers can also be chosen for voice calling in the Phone book. An important detail is here that one can record parts of or whole conversations, something which isn't standard on most phones.
Lastly, Services is probably the most important part of this phone - which is where the user gets to access the mobile Internet through the phone's support of WAP 1.2 over GSM, HSCSD and GPRS.
