Nokia Multimedia Sharing Service

Nokia Oyj, the world's biggest mobile-phone maker, acquired Twango of the U.S. to add photo and video sharing services on mobile phones.

Nokia bought ``substantially all assets'' of Twango, the Espoo, Finland-based company said in a statement distributed by Hugin newswire statement today. No purchase price was disclosed.

The mobile-phone company plans to reorganize its device business into three units from next year, bringing new products and services to the market faster as demand for wireless Internet rises. The purchase will give Nokia a platform for users to store and share photos, videos and audio taken with mobile devices.

"The Twango acquisition is a concrete step towards our Internet services vision of providing seamless access to information, entertainment, and social networks -- at anytime, anywhere, from any connected device, in any way that you choose," Anssi Vanjoki, head of a unit at Nokia making multimedia phones, said in the statement.

Twango is a closely held company founded by former employees of Microsoft Corp., Nokia said in the release. The company is based in Redmond, Washington.

Nokia has sold about 140 million phones equipped with a camera. The company has predicted sales of so-called converged phones that allow wireless Internet access and services will rise to 250 million units by 2008 from 90 million units last year.

In future, Nokia could increasingly be compared with companies such as Apple Inc., the maker of the iPod music player, and TomTom NV, the world's largest maker of car navigation devices, and not just with the likes of Motorola Inc. or Ericsson AB, analysts have said.
